Tamil Community Housing Association opens its new £1 million pound headquarters in Tottenham, London N15
Tamil House, the new headquarters of the Tamil Community Housing Association, was officially opened by the Mayor of Haringey, Cllr Sheik G L Thompson, on 15th January 2008. The opening ceremony was also attended by key note speakers Roger De La Mare, the Housing Corporation's London Region Regulation Director and Jheni Williams, Executive Director of the Federation of Black Housing Organisations.
Tamil House will be used mainly as offices for the Tamil Community Housing Association but will also provide office and community use space for Tamil and other community organisations including TRAG (Tamil Refugee Action Group), the organisation that founded TCHA in 1986. The gala event was chaired by the Association's Chairman, Mr S Arnold and the programme included Tamil cultural events.
In his speech, the Mayor applauded the provision of a new community space for the people of Haringey and communities across London. A sentiment echoed by the Chair of TCHA that the centre would serve as an excellent base for activities that provide young people with an alternative to street culture and the lure of criminal activities.
The purchase of the building was funded entirely by TCHA's own reserves and from the sale of its old office premises in Hatherley Mews, Walthamstow, London E17.
TCHA is a small BME housing association providing housing and culturally sensitive care and support services primarily for the Tamil community.
